EBAA Tech Committee Expands Focus to Include Hardware Innovations

Historically, the Tech Committee has primarily consisted of software vendors who support operators. These members include major flight management solution providers, marketplaces, and sales platforms. Additionally, the committee features several innovative companies offering solutions for optimisation, cybersecurity, and carbon offsetting. This composition reflects the committee’s longstanding focus on enhancing operational efficiency and security through advanced software technologies.

However, the landscape of business aviation is changing. The industry’s push towards a more dynamic and sustainable aerial mobility environment necessitates a broader focus. Recognising this shift, the EBAA Tech Committee has expanded its scope to include technological hardware. This decision followed a productive meeting during the EBAA Annual General Meeting (AGM) and AMAC Conference earlier this March. As a result, during EBACE 2024, the Tech Committee held its first in-person meeting with its newly acquired members. These new members specialise in areas such as electric flight, advanced air mobility, and urban air mobility solutions. This expansion signifies a step towards integrating cutting-edge hardware innovations into the business aviation sector. Furthermore, at a recent online gathering, the Tech Committee decided to focus its initial efforts on two main topics. The first, more immediate focus is aiding EBAA aircraft operator members in rolling out EASA Part-IS regulations to strengthen cybersecurity practices, particularly assisting smaller companies with less technological in-house expertise. The second is supporting AAM companies with existing technology and analysing the gaps that need to be filled to deliver the AAM vision.

Cybersecurity: Protecting the Digital Skies, and more

As technology becomes increasingly integral to aviation, the importance of cybersecurity cannot be overstated. The Tech Committee continues to prioritise cybersecurity, ensuring that the industry’s digital infrastructure remains secure. This focus is crucial in an era where cyber threats are becoming more sophisticated and prevalent, and where technology is more pervasive than ever. Supporting the rollout of EASA Part-IS regulations is a key initiative for the committee, particularly in helping smaller companies with less technological know-how strengthen their cybersecurity practices. Members of the Tech Committee, such as AvioNexus and NERD.aero, working in cybersecurity provide cutting-edge solutions and operational support to protect against these threats. Their expertise helps safeguard sensitive data, ensure the integrity of flight operations, and maintain the trust of passengers and stakeholders.

Advanced Air Mobility: The Future of Urban Transportation

Another critical area of focus for the Tech Committee is advanced air mobility (AAM). This emerging field involves the development of new aerial vehicles, such as electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, designed to transport people and goods in urban environments. This focus was highlighted in a recent discussion among established members and new entrant Joby Aviation.

Electric aircraft represent a significant advance in the quest for sustainable aviation. These aircraft promise to reduce carbon emissions substantially, contributing to the industry’s overall environmental goals. Electric flight technologies are not just about reducing emissions. They also offer the potential for quieter operations, reduced operating costs, and the ability to operate in areas with strict noise regulations. Business Aviation is again at the forefront of innovations that will then trickle down to wider markets and the scheduled airline industry.
