The European Business Aviation Association (EBAA) has taken a pivotal step in promoting sustainability within the Business aviation sector with the successful launch of Tier 1 of the Standards & Training for Aviation Responsibility and Sustainability (S.T.A.R.S.) programme. This initiative represents a collaborative effort by industry stakeholders to address environmental challenges and set a new standard for responsible business practices in business aviation.

The S.T.A.R.S. Programme

S.T.A.R.S. is designed to create a structured pathway for Business aviation professionals to integrate sustainability into their operations comprehensively. It is addressed to all companies throughout the value chain of Business aviation. The programme is divided into three tiers, each building on the previous one to progressively enhance the sustainability credentials of participating companies.

Tier 1, the foundational level, focuses on establishing the core elements necessary to embark on the sustainability journey. Key requirements for Tier 1 certification include:

  1. Appointment of a Sustainability Officer: Each participating organisation will be required to designate a Sustainability Officer responsible for overseeing and implementing sustainability initiatives within the organisation.
  2. Development of a Sustainability Policy: Companies will then be required to create a formal sustainability policy that outlines their commitment to social and environmental sustainable practices.
  3. Conducting a Sustainability Assessment: Participants will finally be asked to perform a comprehensive assessment of their current social and environmental impact, with a view to identify areas for improvement. This assessment forms the basis for future action plans and measures.

By meeting these Tier 1 requirements, companies can demonstrate a clear commitment to sustainability and position themselves as leaders in responsible aviation practices.

Aligning with Global Sustainability Goals and the Business Aviation Commitment on Climate Change

The S.T.A.R.S. programme is designed to align with global sustainability frameworks, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Business Aviation Commitment on Climate Change. This alignment ensures that the actions taken by business aviation companies contribute to broader efforts to address climate change, reduce environmental impact, and promote social responsibility.

The Application Process

The application process for Tier 1 certification is straightforward and accessible. Interested organisations can apply through the S.T.A.R.S. website, with a special launch fee of EUR 485. The deadline for applications is December 15, 2024.

Looking Ahead

With Tier 1 successfully launched, significant advancements in sustainability within business aviation are expected, with Tier 2 and Tier 3 anticipated by the end of the year.
